The Hippocampus is responsible for remembering words, conversations and directions. It even controls how we process new information. For example, when you are learning a new language, you are engaging the hippocampus specifically.
A recent study at the University of British Columbia found that when your heart rate increases through exercise, you are releasing specific chemicals to the hippocampus that strengthen it. In time, this area will get stronger, thus allowing you to remember more effectively.
Enhances Cognitive Function
Cognitive function is the ability to process the world around you and soak in new information whether sensory or academic. When a person is advanced cognitively, they can process complex emotions easier than someone who is low functioning.
Often times, neurological challenges such as ADHD and Autism are due to a low-functioning frontal lobe. This executive function is found primarily in the pre-frontal lobe. This area of the brain controls any advanced processing emotions.
When working out, your body sends specific signals to this part of the brain. When this occurs, your pre-frontal cortex is getting stronger. Thus, executive cognitive functions improve. You are able to process emotions and reactions in a healthy manner.
Improves Mood Stability
Many people associate working out with move improvement. Often times, “feeling the burn” can result in an explosion of emotions. That joy you feel after completing a work out is not a figment of your imagination. Rather, your brain releases endorphins and special hormones called serotonin when you engage in physical activity.
When this occurs, your mood improves dramatically. You will notice an overwhelming sense of peace and satisfaction occur when you engage in these activities on a regular basis.
Many individuals who suffer from anxiety or depression will greatly benefit from incorporating physical activity into their routine. Such physical activities that are perfect for the mind are kickboxing, yoga, and running. These endorphins can help to improve the mood and even build confidence.
